In the early 1900's, Manito Park was quite the place to visit.
There was dancing in the Pavilion on the south shore of Mirror Lake (now the Duck Pond), swimming, weekly band concerts, lawn bowling, tennis, sledding, ice skating and visiting all of the zoo animals.
High above it flew the United States flag on a 120 foot flag pole!
Imagine the flag, flying high above the trees, for everyone to see.
In fact, the flag pole was higher than the hill it was standing on!
Remnants of the flag pole base remain on Flag Hill today.
THE PUZZLE:
Find the remnants to the flag pole on Flag Hill; answer the questions; and get the coordinates to the cache.
THE VISIT:
While you are in Manito Park, take some time to see the rose garden, lilac gardens, perennial gardens, Japanese gardens, Duncan gardens, the Gaiser conservatory, have a picnic or lunch at the Park Bench (summer only) and of course, look for a few other caches!
LATITUDE -
1. Find the flag pole remnants and stand on the East side facing West.
2. Place your GPSr on the graffiti design (east side). What is the altitude? A-B-C-D (Note: Altitude readings have been variable. See HINT if needed.)
3. Multiply the first altitude number times three. A x 3 = X
4. Add X to the latitude of your current position - N 47 38.364 + X = your new latitude.
LONGITUDE -
1. Divide the height of the historic flagpole by the number of base remnants you see. Ht. divided by # = Y
2. Subtract the number of base remnants from this answer. Y minus # = Z
3. Add Z to the longitude of your current position - W 117 24.560 + Z = your new longitude.
Large ammo can was muggled, it is now a small cache (replaced 9/20/07, in 2017 and repaired in 2020).
Please re-hide carefully and watch for muggles! Thanks!
