Geocache Description:

This cache is near the Troll close to the lake Ustedalsfjorden at Geilo.

You will find a track around the lake that passes several interesting places. To fully appreciate the cache you should follow the track all around the lake. This is best done by cross country skiis in winter or by bike in summer since the roundtrip is about 12 km. A shorter alternative roundtrip is also possible in winter but does not pass the cache. You can start either ways, at Solli or at Sandven camping. With children the best way is probably forwards and backwards from Solli or Vestlia to the cache. Along the track there are benches, tables and places to picnic. There are also put up signs with information about the sights you pass.

Some of them are:

Fekjo: an area with about 20 grave-mounds from the viking age. The graves have been opened and among the finds are axe blades, sewing needles, keys, bucket handles and parts of a shield. You can clearly see the mounds in the area. You can also see many coal pits around used for making coal for iron extraction from marsh ore which was a large activity in Ustedalen. There were extracted more iron than needed locally so pig iron was a valuable merchandise.

Through the area the old road “Nordmannsslepa” goes over the Hardangervidda to western Norway. You can still see the protected bridge “Tuftebrui” that crosses the river before running out in Ustedalsfjorden.

The track also passes the newly made golf course and crosses the driving range. Watch out for balls, also in winter!
