This cache is a short walk from the parking area (.20 mi). It is
at the confluence of Latimer gulch and the North and South Forks of
the Calaveras River. This is a great place to start many
adventures. Many people have spent a good deal of time and effort
here looking for some funny golden rocks. Others walk west to get
to the upper reaches of New Hogan reservoir for fishing and other
activities. There are several other caches that way.
The cache is an ammo can hidden completely but not far off the
trail. When placed it contained a TB, some silly putty and various
other toys, a log and a geonote. Please replace as found to be
completely hidden.
Thank you for hunting my cache.
Peace!
12/14/2007 Update!
This cache is not on private property. It is on US Army Corps
land that is part of Lake New Hogan. I talked with the people at
the lake and this is their story. The signs that were placed years
after this cache was placed were placed illegally by the the
hunting club. The story goes that there was an MOU (memo of
understanding) with the railroad that people will use the railroad
bed to access the upper reaches of the lake and the river. The
railroad company, not just these railroad lands (the railroad right
of way), was sold and the new owners leased the land to the hunting
club. The Army Corps is sure that the MOU was still in place when
the ownership of the rail line was changed. The army is now in
legal proceedings to ensure that access to public land is not
inhibited by a leasee of a small portion of the land out here. I
have included a map that was given to me by the Army Corps that
they give to all who wish to access the upper portion of the lake.
It clearly shows where the private property is at and where public
property is at. I hope this clears up the issue for those who wish
to hunt this cache or any others that are accessed by this rail
ROW.
