Harry Curley helped establish the Canoe Race Memorial Monument which was erected overlooking the mighty AuSable River west of Oscoda in memory of racers who have lost their lives which included his 17 year old son Gerald who drowned in Lake Huron during practice in 1953. It is passed every July by the racers who undertake the grueling 120 mile race which starts at dusk in Grayling, runs all night long and takes 14-19 hours to the finish line in Oscoda. This tribute is often visited by fans during race weekend.
