This is one of two Geocaches I have placed in this area. This one involves a walk and is intended for those who have a bit more time (about 2.5 hours). The other one (Blackbean Grove) is only about 30 metres or so from where you can park your Geomobile and both are suitable for the Geokids.
This Geohike will take you to the top of the tallest peak in the Toowoomba area, but unfortunately there are no views to enjoy. Your reward is to enjoy an easy 7 km walk through Ravensbourne State Forest where you can see signs of past logging and plenty of birdlife. (Oh yeah, just watch out for the trail bike riders who it seems are unable to read the signs).
There are some other Geocaches in this area and if you are coming from them be careful if you only have a 2WD Geomobile. If your Geomobile is 4WD you can use the road that starts at S27 22.364 E152 10.668, the sign says Dry Weather Road Only. If, like mine, your Geomobile sometimes thinks it’s a 4WD but is really a 2WD you should head towards to S27 22.625 E152 09.691 and turn down this road, you will soon meet the 4WD track on your left and you should turn right here (National Park Rd).
Turn left at S27 23.450 E152 09.134 ignoring the Private Keep Out sign and park at S27 23.533 E152 09.375 just before a gateway.
I have tried this walk from both directions and it is definitely easier to go in an anti-clockwise direction. Turn right when you go through the gate and the follow the track for about 2.4km. You will then emerge onto a road. Turn left and re-enter the forest at the second gate a few metres up the road. It will be obvious that the first gate is not the right one, unless you really enjoy a challenge! Follow this track until you come to a small rocky track on your left at S27 24.766 E152 09.766. The summit awaits but it is hardly a challenge.
Satellite interference made it difficult to check the co-ordinates so I hope they are accurate. Check the hints for a big clue.
Leave the summit the same way you came and turn left to complete this circuit walk. On the way back you will pass two side tracks – go left at the first one and right at the next. Then just follow the track back you starting point.
