Carloggas Downs - Easy parking - walk up to the waypoint to admire
360' views around St Austell. A nice straightforward multi! Enjoy!
An interesting fact: I have been reliably informed
(thank-you Birdman-of-Liskatraz) that "Carloggas Downs" translates
as "Heap of Mice" in Cornish. Apparently when ECC (English China
Clays, long since owned by Imerys) did the whole 'beautification'
programme, one of the guys on the team knew the Cornish language
and decided to have a bit of a laugh!
.
How to get there
Access is from the A391 route between
Stenalees/Roche and St Austell/Eden project. The turning is pretty
close to the roundabout, marked Carloggas
Downs.
Parking
Best parking at N50'22.499, W004'47.655 ,
just off the main road (though you can drive to the waypoint if you
have a 4x4 or risk your tyres!).
Length
If you park at the suggested location the total walk
should be around 1 - 1.5 miles. It should take much less than 2
hours, probably less than 1.
Terrain
The terrain is not particularly difficult and would
be suitable for children (not pushchairs though given rough
surface).
What you need to find!
At the waypoint you will find the following information - note
(this is all rather straightforward and intended to be a
simple first multicache)
- A. The number of miles away the
dodman point is, then subtract 5. This gives you a value for
A.
- B. The number of miles away St
Breock Windfarm is. Subtract 10. This gives you a value for
B.
- C. At the waypoint you will find
an obvious date: Look at the DAY. The *second* digit gives you a
value for C
- D. Subtract 1 from the MONTH.
This gives you a value for D.
Then make your way to the following co-ordinates
N 50'22.49B W004'4C.D6A.
You'll find a small cache, with logbook & pencils and a
selection of goodies. (Should be large enough to take small
TBs)
Bring a Hat and Scarf - it's WINDY up
there!
