Helidocs Railroad History Series #9
Bisecting the Nygren Wetland Preserve is a 7-10 foot berm like structure. It provides a path and great view of the surrounding wetlands.
This berm is the remnants of the route of the Racine & Mississippi railroad. Built in 1856, it was one of the first railroads between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi river. No power equipment was used, just hands and horses. Like most railroads it changed hands several times - the last owner was the Chicago Northwestern. Like many others - it was abandoned in the late 1970s. Unfortunately, this occurred before the rails to trails movement. Most of the land and property rights were sold to farms and private individuals.
The cache is a 2qt camo painted screw top with the usual stuff. Park near the observation deck off of Rockton Rd. Stay on the trails - only 100 ft or so of bushwacking. No swamp stomping. This should be fairly easy to find, even in the snow.
Wear long pants in spring/summer - the weeds can be rough!
