The
cache is a small, round Rubbermaid container with a white lid on the
periphery of a parking area for this 1,490 acre
public recreation area. Stop at the collection of concrete
donuts, or you'll drive straight through the area.
Directions
Take Rt. 2 to Turners Falls, turn left onto 3rd St. and go up the
hill. Bear right onto Turners Falls Rd. near the pool
store. After you see the big power lines, start watching the left
for the Plains Rd. entrance. Take a left onto Plains Rd. and
follow it until you see the concrete donuts. Plains Rd. becomes
very bumpy at points and there are several Yugo-eating potholes, hence
the 1.5 Terrain rating. The road is infrequently plowed in winter, so you may have a short distance, level walk of a few hundred yards if the road is blocked by snow. Otherwise, it's an easy trip.
The
Cache
I placed this cache so that people could see the bizarre majesty
of this area. There is a unique grandeur to the blend of manmade
"eyesores" and the rugged, twisted pitch pine and oak scrub that cover
the landscape. Come on a clear day and look north and south along
the power lines. It takes my breath away sometimes. The
cache is round Rubbermaid container about 8" across. It has a
white lid. I put some patches, some sci-fi nerdy stuff, and a few
other things in the box for people to trade with. Please carefully rehide, as this is a traffic-laden area.
CITO
This is a very large public recreation area, and the DFW doesn't
have the resources to clean up all the stuff that people dump
here. I've found fridges, cars, and all sorts of other
stuff. If you find some trash while wandering, please take it
with you. If you find more than you can take, please note the
waypoint for it in the log book and/or the online log page.
Thanks!

About Montague
Plains
From http://www.montague.net/tour/millers.html
Montague
Plains Wildlife
Management Area, a fifteen hundred acre, state
wildlife refuge and unique ecological area, operated by the
Massachusetts Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. The “Plains” are a
rare pine barren, which supports habitat for many rare plants and
animals. The Montague Plains area located on a large sand delta that
was formed more than 10,000 years ago when melt water streams from the
retreating glaciers emptied into Glacial Lake Hitchcock, a huge lake
that covered much of Montague and the Connecticut River Valley during
the glacial period. The Plains are a popular attractions for nature
walks, ecological field trips for the nearby University of
Massachusetts and Greenfield Community College students, hunting in
season (pheasant, deer and small game), dirt and mountain
biking, and mushroom collection.
