Geocache Description:

A short walk through the wood.

Catcleugh Reservoir was built between 1899 - 1905 for the Newcastle and Gateshead Water Company. The dam is built of earth with a core of puddle clay and is stone faced on the water side. The overflow at the south end of the dam runs under a bridge and nearby is a valve house and gauge house.

There were originally 47 cabins forming a shanty town called 'Newcastle' housing the workers who built Catcleugh Reservoir and their families. When the dam was finished all but one of the cabins was demolished. The remaining hut was used as an office and store and was finally abandoned in the 1950s. It was restored in the 1980s and is now a visitor centre and Grade II Listed Building.

The scenery around the reservoir is of hills and forests as far as the eye can see and the neighbouring Whitelees Nature Reserve provides much varied wild life along with beautiful swans on the lake. There is a longer walk beyond the reservoir on good paths up through the woods.

The cache box contains the usual bits and bobs - ENJOY!
