Geocache Description:

We invite you to visit the medium wave radio broadcasting antenna tower - the Big Cigar - at Lakihegy.

The emitting aerial of the Lakihegy broadcasting station was erected in 1933 based on American plans adopted by Hungarian experts. The construction of the aerial was made by the Hungarian State Iron, Steel and Machine Factory in Budapest (MÁVAG) under the supervision of engineer Károly Messányi. At the time of its erection the tower with its 314 m height (284 m girder structure and 30 m high tuning tube) and 280 t weight was the highest steel construction of the world. The programme Radio I. of the Hungarian Radio was broadcasted by the tower to the whole country at 546 kHz till 1944 when explored during Wold War Events. In 1946 the tower was reconstructed. In 1985 it was declared as industrial monument. It is still in operation though today it serves exclusively industrial purposes. We suggest to park your car at N: 47° 22.512' E: 19 ° 00.291, at the entrance of the way to the tower. The cache, which is a 10*6*4 cm sized plastic citchen box, can be found at N: 47° 22.459' E: 19° 00.187' ASL: 102 m. The cache can be approached from the suggested parking place by foot or by bike on a path. We wish you a successful cache hunting! Cic and Pityulino
