Geocache Description:

Located In Patuxent River Park, Near Selby's Landing. For permit information, call 301-627-6074.

Peter Cooper did not actually sleep here, but near here. On July 17, 1887, the steam barge Peter Cooper left Washington, DC, journeyed down the Potomac, entered the Chesapeake Bay, and turned north on the Patuxent. Her holds were empty, awaiting a load of diatomite from the New York Silica Company, which owned land near Lyons Creek. Two days later, as she approached Lyons Creek Wharf, the barge caught fire suddenly. The barge burned to the waterline as she floated upstream. Her crew, with barely enough time to escape, was rescued by workers from the mines. The wreck of Peter Cooper settled on the western shore of the Patuxent, near Selby's Landing.

Park at Selby's Landing. There is a trail back by the road that runs alongside the river. Cache container is a military decon box. PLEASE be careful when removing, handling, and replacing the container, and leave no trace. ALSO, take care when resealing the container; it is a sturdy container that seals tightly, but you must make sure all sides have been snapped down. It is small and contains a log book, pen, pencil, a yellow Jeep TB, and a keychain compass. Good luck!
