Geocache Description:

Total Wreck Mine is for those that like a good off road adventure.

Updated 01/29/05
Total Wreck Mine is a favorite place of ours to visit. For this reason we thought it would be a great place for our first Geocache. We hope everyone enjoys this place as much as we do. We look forward to hearing about your adventure and seeing any accompanying images.
This mine was operational in the late 1800’s with up to 200 people and 50 homes. For more (very interesting) information go to these two web sites: (visit link) and (visit link)
The Geocache is a green ammo box (given to us by our riding buddy Robert aka: Rugged Robert) that has a Geocache sticker on the front and back. It contains official Geocaching items such as key rings, stickers, magnets and such. There is also a Dirt Bike Travel Bug included in the cache.
There are a few different ways to get there. One way is from Interstate 10, take Hwy 83 (I-10 exit 281) South, or from Sonoita go North on Hwy 83, to Empire Ranch Rd (between mile markers 40 and 39). Go East on Empire Ranch Rd for a short distance to the gas line road at N31 46.283 W110 39.166. Go left (North) on the gas line road to the location. The gas line road will require four-wheel drive. There are go arounds on some of the rougher hills. Most stock four-wheel drives with aggressive tires should make the trip. There are lots of loose rocks, many with sharp edges capable of cutting a tire.
Another route is by Hilton Ranch rd. We have heard that this route can be done with a two-wheel drive pick up. We went and did this trip with our Ford F250HD extended cab long bed 4x4. We did it in 2wd. There is adequate clearance on this pick up and it has a Limited Slip rear end. The trip was doable in 2wd but the limited slip rear end helped out. I would quess that a compact 2wd or better pick up would make the trip, but would require a run at some of the hills. Stock 4x4’s with adequate clearance will make the trip just fine. To get there by this route take Hwy 83 (I-10 exit 281) South to Hilton Ranch Road, mile marker 49.2, (N31 52.672 W110 40.489) or from Sonoita go north on Hwy 83 to Hilton Ranch Road, mile marker 49.2, (N31 52.672 W110 40.489). (We have a GPS route in map source format, just send an e-mail requesting it and we will be happy to send it to you.) Go East on Hilton Ranch Road to the split at N31 52.893 W110 37.474. Take the two track that angles off to the right (Northeast) and follow this to the intersection at N31 54.186 W110 35.932. Go right (Southeast) and follow to the mine. Be careful, the last ½ mile has areas where the road is washed out on the left side.
There are many mineshafts in the area of Total Wreck Mine so keep a close eye or leash on kids and dogs.
Have fun,
Runningbare,
Bob, Sue, Jessie and Reba.
