Geocache Description:

Walterboro Army Airfield Memorial Park and Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Anderson Field, with its three unpaved landing strips was built in 1933 on 60 acres. In 1942 the U.S. Army Air Corps leased the field and purchased an additional 3712 acres to create a new Walterboro Army Airfield. At one time during WWII the base housed a military population of 6000 as well as hundreds of German POWs. After the war the field was deeded back to Walterboro and Colleton County. Today, the airport features a new 6000 foot runway capable of handling 737 air traffic. On most weekends you can sit back and watch area skydivers enjoying their hobby in the Walterboro Wild Blue Yonder. This memorial park is also part of the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor. Please note the article posted in the Photo Gallery on 01/11/2009 by geocacher "logonas" regarding two German POWs detained in Walterboro. EXTRA CREDIT!! If you continue about 500 feet north to 32 55.115N and 080 38.215W you'll see an original Norden Bombsight Building from WWII. If you would, please record your hometown and state on your computer log. I'd love to see where all my visitors are from. The cache container is a small, magnetic container. Check the "hint" for additional Cache Log information. And, as always, don't forget to Cache In and Trash Out. Thank you.
