When the turnpike route was finalized in 1940, it cut through farms, backyards; and land owned by St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, bisecting the small town of New Baltimore.
An article from the official PA Turnpike’s site describes the ensuing unique arrangement this way. "So St. John’s and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission struck an unusual deal: The church agreed to cede the property; in exchange, the turnpike built a pull-off and steps for anybody who wanted to worship."

The small lock and lock cache is located in an easily accessible location. We’d recommend that you exit the turnpike and park at the local park on Findley/Baltimore Streets for safety reasons. Posted coordinates will take you to the parking area.
