Geocache Description:

The cache is at a sarsen stone known as “Rest And Be Thankful” on the downs above Southwick.

The suggested parking place is at the top end of Upper Kingston Lane off the Old Shoreham Road (N 50° 50.722 W 000° 14.535). However, the cache can be approached from other directions, as there are quite a few paths in the area.

"Rest And Be Thankful" is the name of a stone that rests along the track between Southwick and Thunders Barrow. It is a block of sarsen stone measuring roughly 3 feet square and 2 feet high, which makes an excellent seat. This is probably how it got its name. The stone was apparently moved here from Southwick Church, where it was originally built into the fabric of the church. However, when the wall was widened in the 19th century, the stone was brought here as one of the boundary stones along the track. Most of these boundary stones, of which many more were marked on earlier OS maps, are now missing. There is an interesting hollow on the top of the stone which is thought by some experts to be a flint axe polishing surface.

The cache is a 35mm film can containing only the logbook (you will need your own pen/pencil).

Please do not leave anything else in it, and PLEASE PLEASE take special care to replace the cap securely, as the log gets very soggy if you don't.

There is a good view along the coast to the W and, on a clear day, you could be lucky and make out the Isle of Wight.
