Geocache Description:

The 140-hectare water-based Country Park is a bird watcher's paradise with a wide range of ducks, waders, geese and gulls. A network of paths makes it ideal for cycling and walking, as well as picnics, this is a dog friendly area, please ensure you have your scoop with you !

The River Soar and the Grand Union Canal run through the Park, providing an essential corridor for wildlife as well as a route for boating and walking. There are two lakes and a life-sized woolly mammoth overlooks one of the lakes!

Sand and gravel have been extracted from the valley of the River Soar for many years. In the early 1980s the County, City and Charnwood Borough Councils joined forces to begin to reclaim the area’s derelict pits for recreation and nature conservation. Over the last 15 years much work has been done to create footpaths, bridges, car parks, access roads, cycleways, bird hides and so on. Hundreds of thousands of trees have also been planted. The park is looked after by a full time warden service.

King Lear’s Lake has been named after the legend of King Lear, who ruled Britain in the 8th century. On his death he was buried in a chamber under the River Soar - possibly close to this lake! The statues, built on a platform in the lake, show the final scene from Shakespeare’s play of King Lear.

There is also the John Merricks lake which the cache is near, dedicated after the leading Olympic sailor and 1996 Atlanta Olympic silver medallist.

John Merricks died tragically in a car accident whilst competing in the 1997 Melges 24 European Championships in Italy.

There is also the Hope & Anchor pub next to the canal at the North end of the park, for Beer, food & refreshments and any canal cachers can moor their narrowboats & attempt this one on foot. The cache is a 180ml lock & lock tub.
