Whitewebbs - the only Guy in the village Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

kbootb: I've moved 150 miles away. I kept it going for 3 years after the move but get back so rarely that it's not feasible to look after it. It's a shame, it's been going a long while. Anybody willing to adopt it?

Geocache Description:

This cache is a now a plastic 'clip lock' box, (was an ammo box), hidden in the forested area of Whitewebbs Park. This is a historic estate owned by Enfield Council and links to Forty Hall and Hilly Fields, a superb area for exploring, at the very northern edge of London.

The history dates back to Henry VIII. The area was part of the hunting grounds Enfield Chace. A house on this site was owned by Agnes and Stephen Wilford in 1543. In 1570 a mansion was owned by Henry VIII physician, Dr Robert Huicke. The hunting ground was made into common land in 1777. In 1790 the previous mansion was demolished and the current one built. The land was enclosed to form an estate in 1803.

So the name of the cache? – The Mansion was one of the meeting places for Guy Fawkes when planning the Gunpowder Plot.

Nearby is the King and Tinker pub. Much of the pub dates from 16th Century, but a pub was recorded here about 1000 years ago.

There are two stories attached to the pub. The first gives it the name. King James became separated from his hunting party and took refuge in the ‘alehouse’ and drank with a local tinker. His guards eventually found him and that was when the tinker discovered who he had been drinking with.

The second story is that this was the pub that Guy Fawkes had his last drink before setting off to London. Strangely, it was King James who had been drinking with the tinker that was to be the victim of the plot.
