View the greatest engineering feat on the NI main trunk railway
Park in access carpark on Raurimu road not on SH 4. (In order to fully appreciate this engineering feat it is best to watch the train on the hill spiral for about 10 minutes.While ascending or decending the spiral you can view the same train on four different levels -- twice heading north and twice heading south. The line rises 234 feet in an airline of 1 1/4 miles and a rail distance of 4 1/4 miles, giving a steady grade of one in fifty through seven curves of 7 1/2 chains radius and two tunnels. This was planned in 1898 when the whole area was covered in heavy bush and finished in 1907 enabling the Auckland to Wellington line to be linked up further south near Makatote Viaduct.)
