HorizonGeo's Dog Island Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Blue Man: Unfortunately, this one is long gone. I suspected that a cache on this island might be short-lived but I'm still disappointed about it.

Yes, we found a moderately sized two-toed amphiuma in Lake Maitland. I always find something interesting while on the job.

I had a few travels bugs with me today and I'll post a photo but refrain from logging them through the cache.

Geocache Description:

Dog Island is a 2-acre spot of land in Lake Maitland and delineates the boundary between the cities of Maitland and Winter Park. It is also designated as a wildlife refuge and resting area for boaters. There is a picnic table, grill, trash cans, and someone has recently erected a lean-to for shelter. The cache is a smallish cylinder aproximately 12" in length and with a 2" diameter mouth, so don't plan to trade anything too big. It has been covered with camo tape.

Dog Island

Not too long ago, there was a cache on Dog Island. Unfortunately, it didn't last very long. This island is heavily used by boaters and party seekers on nights and weekends. Here is my tribute to the original Dog Island cache.

There seems to be a current trend to name a new cache after the first cacher to find it. I will reverse that trend and re-name this cache after the most recent finder.

In their effort to discourage non-residents from using the public lakes, the cities impose a hefty one-day fee for motorized vessels. You can call 407-599-3292 for information or you can obtain a permit at either the Winter Park Library located at 28° 35.734 81° 20.794, the Winter Park City Hall located at 28° 35.684 81° 21.049, or the Maitland Community Park located at 28° 38.321 81° 21.078. To determine the one-day charge, add the length of your boat (in feet) and the horsepower of your motor. Multiply the sum by 15 cents for non-residents of Winter Park or Maitland or by 10 cents if you are a resident. Don't forget your boat registration! FWIW, I have never been asked to show a permit while on the water.

The closest public boat ramp to the cache is located at Ft. Maitland - 28° 37.202 81°21.842.
