Located towards the eastern end of Ship Creek's new trail in downtown Anchorage, MicroShip2 overlooks a portion of the stream in both its original form and in its overdeveloped state.
This location is learning to deal with visitors on foot. The new trail penetrates a heavily-developed corridor along Ship Creek's southern bank, and offers a glimpse of the efforts to rehabilitate the stream habitat. Don't leave the paved trail to access the stream as it is prime salmon and trout habitat. This area is off-limits to salmon fishing, and occasionally visited by bears (and other unauthorized fishers) interested in harvesting salmon found guarding their redds (nested eggs in gravel) in this portion of the stream. This sounds unbelievable in the midst of so much development, but the creek is virtually wild beginning just 150 yards upstream where it leaves Elmendorf AFB, and a coyote was glimpsed hunting along the bank here during placement. Cache location is chosen to be wheelchair accessible and kid-friendly, although dedicated parking is absent in this portion of the trail. Please replace the cache as found to preclude its accidental discovery, and help keep this stream habitat clean by practicing CITO!
