How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

The celebration of the life and works of the great Scottish poet, Robert Burns (1759-1796), is traditionally held on or about his birthday (January 25th). Since that would be a Tuesday, the 29th works just fine for me. For more information on Rabbie Burns, please see "Robert Burns Country". There are even some English translations of his works.

The traditional Burns night dinner, usually has recitations of the Bard's poetry, so if anyone feels up to it, you are more than welcome to recite a poem, sing a Scottish song, do a wee dance. If anyone plays the bagpipes, bring 'em along. Whatever cranks your sporran. Guests in Kilts will be highly honoured and even more so if they cache in Kilts, before or after the event. Children, kilted or not, are welcome to attend. Since this is not an official Burns night for the pub, the traditional piper and master of ceremonies will not be there.

This is a perfect tie-in for geocaching, since hiking, like most things, was invented in Scotland. That statement alone will give us plenty to talk about. The gathering will take place at the Shilling & Stout Pub, 1900 Walker's Line, Burlington, ON L7R 3X4. Phone: (905) 335-3786. That is on the southwest corner of Walker's Line and Upper Middle Road. Saturday, January 29th, 2005, at 6:30pm.

Since this is a bit of a last-minute thing (my fault), our hosts need to have a pretty good idea how many people are coming and even more specificallly, how many will be having the Traditional Haggis Dinner. For $9.95 you get haggis, mashed potatoes & neeps (turnip). For those less daring souls, "ordinary" pub fare will also be available.

Please let me know as soon as possible:

  1. How many in your party?
  2. Will you be having dinner?
  3. Will you be having Haggis?
  4. Do you wish to recite a poem?
  5. Anything I've missed?

There will be live entertainment, by a duo called "Hair of the Dog", later in the evening.
