This cache takes you to the Ring Mountain Preserve. It is a place well-suited for a certain kind of magic. The earliest Miwok village on the site was dated to 370 BC, and there are petroglyphs on at least 30 rock outcroppings -- most noticeably on Petroglyph Rock just off Reed Ranch Fire Road, near Ring Mountain Fire Road. A Miwok grinding stone can be seen near a spur trail, not too far from the Paradise entry. There are rare rocks and plants -- the Tiburon Mariposa Lily grows only on this ridge and the Tiburon Blind Harvestman, a tiny arachnid, lives under rocks only on the Mountain. Remnants of an anti-aircraft facility, built in the early days of the cold war, can also be found.
The cache is a small container near rocks that reminded me of a Sphinx. The terrain depends on how you get there. It is a short and easy walk to the cache location from the nearest parking area. For longer hikes, there are several ways to come to the cache and to explore the other areas of the preserve.
If you need help to find the cache, you may want to ask the Sphinx:
Bone of the earth,
Box of green.
