This is a multipoint cache with 4 intermediate points before the cache is reached. The intermediate points are all small metal tags. Total round trip distance is about 1 mile. Most points are near well used trails, but at one waypoint some climbing is required to reach waypoint.
The best place to begin is from the Sawyer Park parking lot (N 44° 05.186, W 121° 18.649).
Newberry Volcano, south of Bend, is a massive shield shaped composite volcano which covers some 500 square miles (an oval shaped area about 30 miles north-south and 20 miles east-west). One flow from Newberry about 80,000 years ago (12/13/14 - more work now places this at about 73,000 years ago) originated from a buried vent some where southeast of Lava River Cave (12/13/14 - near Mokst Butte). This flow extends northward to the south edge of Redmond, underlies most of Bend east of the Deschutes River, and is the same flow in which Lava River Cave is located. Imagine what a flow of that size would do to the area today.
This flow displaced the Deschutes River into a new channel which generally followed the western edge of the flow through the Bend area. At a point upstream of the Mt. Washington Bridge, some feature at the edge of the flow diverted the initial flow of the river out onto the flow. In the Sawyer Park area the river returned to the edge of the flow. The waypoints and cache location are all located near the original flow surface. The lower areas in the park were all eroded to their current levels by the river as it reestablished it’s channel.
The waypoints are all small metal tags (some hidden by a rock) and the cache is in an ammo can.
