Piggy Dam Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Alford Family: Due to flora taking over the area getting to the cache location is no longer an easy task with the brambles at the final location particularly viscious so the ammo box has now been physically removed.
Thank you to all the visitors who have been here and enjoyed this little bit of countryside.

Geocache Description:

A pleasant riverside walk of just over half a mile in open countryside.

Piggy Dam is an area in the NE corner of Old Basing near Basingstoke in Hampshire. The village is probably best known for the ruins of Basing House as featured on the Ch4 TV program Time Team. The footpath to the cache follows the route of the River Loddon that flows for 45 KM from Basingstoke in a NE direction to its junction with the River Thames just west of Wargrave in Berkshire. More local info here..www.oldbasing.gov.uk There was parking for a couple of vehicles at the start of the lane N 51°16.808 W 001° 02.339 but unfortunately that has now been blocked so alternative parking can be found just down the road in the village hall car park located at N 51° 16.664 W 001° 02.644. This will mean a short walk back along the road to the start point. Be aware that in wet weather the route can get a bit muddy and so wellies or other suitable footwear are recommended. If you have a canine cacher in your team you may want to bring a towel to dry them off before you put them back in the car as there is ample opportunity for them to practice there doggy paddle if they are that way inclined. Normally lots of things you may come across including Pheasants, Kingfishers, Heron, Deer, Rabbits, Hares and even a Brown trout or two if you are lucky. Beware of seasonal prickly and stingy stuff growing along the way. The route from suggested parking spot to the cache itself is just over half a mile but if you prefer a longer walk OS Landranger map 186 shows the local footpaths available. Nearest cache is #7 on the 1000th series loop or why not try out a couple of cache sites at the other end of the village. Lime Pickle or for the more adventurous Catch Cromwell Jump Jump. The given coordinates are for a hidden item displaying the main cache co-ordinates which is a medium size ammo box containing log book and various goodies for swapping. The 1st part has had to be relocated at landowners request and is now in a more exposed position next to the footpath as is the main cache so please be discreet when locating and ensure you re hide them well afterwards. This is not normally a very busy route but be aware it does attract more people in the good weather and is a regular dog walking route for some. This is the first geocache that we have placed but it was changed to a multicache on 7th October 2005 after the original location @ the footbridge was discovered and the cache container stolen. We took several co-ordinate readings for the new locations and they were slightly different each time. If you think that they need a tweak just let us know and we will update them as required. We hope that you enjoy the walk and have a safe journey home.
