Geocache Description:

Regular cache located near Bentley Priory.

Bentley Priory has a history dating back to 1170 when it was founded by a cell of Augustinian Friars, however the original Priory was pulled down and rebuilt in 1766 by Sir John Soane, for the First Marquis of Abercorn. The Priory was the final home of the Dowager Queen Adelaide, widow of William IV, before her death in 1849. It also served as a hotel and girl's school before it was acquired by the Royal Air Force in 1926.
The Priory is most famous for its role during the Battle of Britain, where it served as the Headquarters of Fighter Command, where Air Chief Marshal Lord Dowding led the battle that turned the tide of the War in the Allies favour.

For those interested more info can be found at http://www.raf.mod.uk/history/bp.html

This cache (a clear plastic container) is hidden near the Priory where glimpses of its military role, both past and present can be caught.

We would highly recommend this cache for those who enjoy night caching, although it is still good fun during the day. Either way, look out for the swamp! (wellies definitely recommended after rain)

Recommended parking for this and the other three ‘Priory' caches is at 51°37.743'N, 0°19.427'W, and the footpath can be accessed via Priory Drive (this is a private Road so you can not park there). Alternatively you can combine these caches with the ‘Grim' caches and park at 51°37.228'N, 0°20.968'W (both car parks are free).
