Geocache Description:

The second of two related caches takes in very easy walking close by a popular picnic area, at the Bridge of Potarch on Deeside.

This cache is perfect for a lazy picnic-ing Sunday afternoon in summer – or for a quick lunchtime cache at any time of the year. Very close by the Potarch Hotel, situated across the River Dee from the main A93 Banchory to Aboyne road. As you cross over the bridge look out for the mischievous water- kelpie which at one time was said to haunt the ancient ferry across the river, but which disappeared unfortunately when the bridge was built.

At Potarch, the great North Road over the Cairn O’ Mount formerly crossed the river at Inchbare, a little below the bridge. It was at this ford that Edward I crossed the Dee on his way to and from Kildrummy. The drovers going south also went over the Shooting Greens from Potarch and headed for Whitestone on Feughside before driving their cattle over the Cairn O' Mount. The green at Potarch was the scene of one of the many old-time fairs held on Deeside, and in more recent years has become a mecca for weekend trippers from Aberdeen and further afield.

Park at the green at around N57. 03.827 W002. 39.010, where there are toilet facilities, bins, picnicking tables, and even recycling bins. Walk up to the back of the green, where you will see an open gateway in the fence – this is the entrance to the forest trails provided here. As you head towards the cache you will cross a small burn – this is the Burn of Angels, hence the name of the cache, where this name originated has unfortunately been lost through time so if anyone can enlighten me…! There is a log walkway provided to assist crossing this small burn, and for the rest of the way you are on good paths, until in the vicinity of the cache where you will have to do an easy bit of cross-country! Hopefully the tree cover will not skew the reception too much in the summer. The cache is in a medium-sized plastic box in a dark carrier bag. The total time need for this cache would be around 45 minutes.
