Land of the Lost, Smith Park Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

the hiking viking: Sad, it is true. Smith park no longer exists in the City of Akron. The 2 year old that I used was inaccurate. Go figure! [:)] Was sold off bit by bit. I spoke with the manager of the nearby cell phone tower complex, he wouldn't mind the cache but doesn't want to haggle with corporate above him for permission. [:(] Will move this cache on to a new spot. I'm very sad about this one. No hike involved to find the cache, but the location and scenery was worthy of a nice fat ammo can! Stay tuned for this ammo can to find a new home. Dan the hiking viking.

Was out hunting cache spots recently when a check of my Akron map showed a big park that I never heard of. Hmmm, east side of Akron, used to work over there, never heard of the park. Off I go to check it out.

Well over an hour later, I've got no park. I can't find a stinkin' entrance to the park! I did one full lap around where the park SHOULD be and nothing. I searched from all points on the compass. I'm searching the map, I'm driving up and down every side street, I'm stepping out of my car looking past fences. I got nothing but dead ends and commercial private property. BUPKIS is what I have. What gives? The surrounding area is a split of 50% commercial, 50% residential. I checked every parking lot and back alley. BUPKIS. (yes, I used that word again, I like it ). Not deterred, I begin a second lap around the area. This time, I see a sign, "CITY OF AKRON PARK DEPARTMENT'S MAINTENANCE YARD". Woo hoo! Those guys would know how to get to Smith Park, it's their repsonsibilty to maintain it! . I pull into the yard and head into the office with my map book in hand and.... They didn't know either! A supervisor and 3 union guys didn't have a clue about that park! I said, "C'mon. It's on the map, less than a 1/2 mile from your yard here!" We check their big color Summit County wall map (Got to get me one of those). Ha! The park is shown there! "How do I get to it?!" More silence. We all head outside and I show them my GPS and I point up towards a wooded area across the street, where the park should be. All we see up there are communication towers. One of the guys says, "Oh, I remember now, that area was going to be devleoped into a high security Federal prison a few years back. But if never happened." I say thanks anyway, excuse myself, and let them get back to their lazyboy chairs. Going back to my 'street by street' search, I finally stumble across a landscape that reminds me of hiking out in the desert. Hmm, and I see a perfect cache spot! According to my GPS, it's just inside the border of this phantom park. Cha Ching! Cached placed! I never cached in the desert but this area has the flavor and feel of what I imagine that they do out west in Arizona/New Mexico. You'll see when you get here. The only hint you need is: Approach from the South! Remember what you are looking for. NO BUSHWHACKING ! You can park less than 100 feet from the spot. You'll be on a public road searching public land. An oddity, my map book and the City's wall map had the park listed as Smith Park. I just checked MapQuest and it shows the park as South Park. ???? This must be an undeveloped park that since it sits high in our county, the city rented parcels of it out to big name coporations for money instead of making it an actual park. Oh well, there is pedestrian access to parts of it. Good enough for a cache! This is my 23rd cache placement in the Greater Akron area. Enjoy and cache on!
