Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden with the permission of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority who manage the site. Please take care not to disturb any of the industrial archaeology or natural history.

An interpretation trail has been laid out in two loops starting at the Hoffmann kiln if you want to explore further.

The cache is hidden just off the 'Craven Lime Works Trail' on the B6479 past Langcliffe out of Settle. Turn under the railway bridge opposite Langcliffe Papermill.

Details of a longer walk can be found on the Local Walks page of the website www.langcliffe.net.org.uk

Limestone has been burnt in field kilns for centuries in the Yorkshire Dales. The lime produced was used to 'sweeten' the local farmland and make mortar for buildings. During the late 19th century, demand for lime grew and industrial sized kilns were built.

The Craven Lime Works site was chosen for the industrial production of lime because of the closeness of the Settle to Carlisle railway line and the good source of limestone. The lime produced was used for many things ranging from paper making, the manufacture of steel , sugar refining and even making chocolate.

Lime production stopped in 1939 and soon after quarrying for stone. Since then, nature has gradually reclaimed the site, even those parts that were later used as a rubbish tip.

If you want to find out more about the lime industry in the Yorkshire Dales visit our archaeology website www.outofoblivion.org.uk

Please note - The cache is not hidden in any of the kilns or other buildings.

A flask of tea would be a good decoy so you can sit and pretend you are watching the world go by. We don't advertise the site in order to protect it but walkers and locals are regular visitors.

Could do with a great deal of cache in trash out so take a bag please!
