Geocache Description:

NOTE: CACHE COORDINATES HAVE CHANGED. As of December 1, 2010, please use the following: N 38 47.295, W 104 54.273.

Cache is located off a well-groomed trail suitable for families with children. Wear hiking footwear. Observe posted safety signs. Difficulty rating in the winter is higher (about 3.5) due to snow and possibly ice on the trail.

Silver Cascade Falls is a lovely area above Helen Hunt Falls in North Cheyenne Canyon. We hope you will enjoy your visit to this scenic area. Don’t miss the view of the city.

We had lived in Colorado Springs several years before discovering the falls for ourselves. My brother and I were children that day, and our father, Carl Jesse, had taken us to Helen Hunt Falls to hike. We decided to take the trail that led up the hill past the waterfall and see what was there. When we got to the area near the current cache site, we were amazed to see another waterfall, which we later learned was called Silver Cascade. From that day on, we never went to Cheyenne Canyon without hiking to both these falls. After my brother and I had grown, dad would frequently go there with his dog or mine. It was one of his favorite places.

A few weeks before my dad passed away in January of 2005, my husband Larry and I told him we would like to honor him with a cache at this location. At that point, his illness made any hike impossible for him, but he seemed pleased to know that something representing him would remain at the falls.

Dad was a wonderful husband and father, and all who knew him loved him. He was small in stature, but he stood tall when others around him couldn’t, extending his hand to help lift them up. Doctors said it was his life-long struggle with asthma that enlarged his heart, but I’ll always believe it was simply full of love.

Besides his family and friends, two loves sustained my father – his love for God and his love for his country. That is why we have chosen “God and Country” as the theme for this cache. Please trade items that are either religious or patriotic in nature. Respectfully, we ask that any religious items be Christian to honor my dad’s Christian faith. Patriotic items are very appropriate, but avoid anything supporting a particular political party, candidate, or cause. Original cache contents include:

“I Love America” travel bug
ball maze
child’s cross necklace
God bless the USA football
patriotic t-shirt (size medium, never worn)*
God Bless America book*
cross/flag pin*
2 USA stars

*items that had belonged to my dad

To find the cache, proceed to the parking area at 38° 47.325N, 104° 54.163W. From there take the trail over Helen Hunt Falls (visible from parking area) about 0.17 mi. to 38° 47.291N, 104° 54.264W. At this point, you will walk off the trail about 150 feet to the cache. As this is a popular hiking trail, watch out for mugglers. The cache is a standard ammo box.

Happy caching!
