Pedlar WMA Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

wvcoalcat: Sorry folks. Not replacing this one. This was my first "park then climb". Went up last weekend to replace and thought to myself there's no reason to be here except for a cache few visit anymore. No views, no nice rocks, nada. Looked for the old cache with no luck and carried the replacement back down. Sheesh, 15 year younger me didn't have half the trouble as current me did. :-)
Look for the ammo can someplace else sometime.

Geocache Description:

Following is the news release for the recently created Pedlar WMA, obtained from the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources website, dated September 3, 2004.

"The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) has announced the establishment of a new Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Monongalia County , according to Ed Hamrick, Director of the WVDNR. “The Pedlar Wildlife Management Area consists of property formerly owned by CONSOL Energy Inc. and recently donated to the State of West Virginia for the public's enjoyment and benefit,” said Hamrick.

“The acquisition of public lands in the Harrison , Marion and western Monongalia County region continues to be a high priority for our agency due to the scarcity of public lands and the large number of hunters and anglers who reside in this portion of the state,” Hamrick said. “CONSOL Energy Inc. should be commended for this generous gift which will assure that this property will be enjoyed by future generations of anglers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts.”

“Our philosophy is to create a full cycle of value in the property we own. At one time, these sites were water treatment facilities for the former Pursglove and Osage mines,” said Denny Stanhagen, president of CNX Land Resources Inc., a CONSOL Energy subsidiary. “Then these properties contributed to the nation's energy supply, and now, they will serve an equally important role of protecting habitat and open spaces.”

The Pedlar Wildlife Management Area lies in northcentral Monongalia County and consists of two separate parcels, which total 765 acres. Access to the Pedlar WMA is by way of State Route 7 and County Route 41, approximately 7 miles west of Morgantown , WV . The WMA, which is primarily forested, will provide hunting opportunities for deer, wild turkey, squirrel, waterfowl and other game species. The primary attraction on the WMA will be the two impoundments, totaling approximately 23 acres, which will be stocked to provide a warm water fishery upon completion of renovations to the dams."

I included the above because I felt I couldn’t explain this area any better, and I really hate to type.

The entrance is at N 39° 41.245’ W 080° 06.626 marked with a sign, and there is a small parking area just up the hill before the gate.

Please remember to use proper precautions during hunting season.

The cache is a 30 caliber ammo box.
