Geocache Description:

The best way in: Travel west on SR 160 towards Pahrump & take a left on Tecopa Road. Travel down the road a few miles, take a right on Front Sight Road & follow the signs. I have spent hours out here exploring & have not found any NO TRESPASSING signs.

We found this place by accident a while back & thought it would be a neat place for a cache. I have spent many hours on the Internet trying to find more information on this place before we just stuck a cache out there but I have not learned as much as I had hoped to. I am hoping that someone who finds this will know more about it & put it in a log so that we can learn more. I believe that in the 1800’s this was known as the Manse Ranch then the Yount Ranch. There is a lot of history regarding these two families in Nevada. I am most curious about the man Roland H. Wiley who bought this place and obviously put many hours of hard work & his time as well as his money into this area. I believe that somewhere out here there is a gravesite with the mummified remains of an Indian renegade known as Queho, which Roland H. Wiley took possession of in order to give him a proper burial. I have yet to locate this. Did people live here or did they just come to visit? Was this some sort of weekend religious retreat? I know that there have been many famous people to visit this area when it was in its prime. I have found on the US Dept. of Transportation website that Roland H. Wiley is still listed as the owner of this airport. Although vandals have destroyed the area, I still feel that this is a fascinating area. I wish I could have been around there in the 1970’s and more so to have known Roland H. Wiley. I am going to continue with my searching the Internet about him & hope to some day find that there is a book out there written about him. I don’t know why but I am very curious about him & this entire area. We have been out to this area a few times & hope you like it as much as we do. Rather than taking up too much room typing all of this, check out the listed websites for further information. http://ludb.clui.org/ex/i/NV3158 ; http://www.deathvalley.com/dvtalk/messages/10788.shtml ; http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/1999/Jul-22-Thu-1999/news/11607167.html ; http://expressrealtyandloans.com/id166.html ; This is a multi-cache that any vehicle can get to BUT if you decide to explore areas that this cache does not take you to then you may need a high clearance vehicle in some spots. This is our first “multi-cache” & I suggest that before exploring the area, you find the first coordinate and go from there. Thank you. The cache is in a green ammo can. The hint is "metal Poles" the coords should be written on or around metal poles, probably multiple times. If they are faded, check the clue. The clue includes the final coords. If you have no access to the clue, read below and you should find it anyway. April 23, 2012 by DesertXplorers Yes, the final coords take one to the top of a small mesa, which by definition is surrounded by cliffs, and it is not a drive up or walk up and find sitting in the middle of the top of the flat mesa. When the cache was placed there was a very nice sign that had been thrown off the small mesa, probably by vandals, or perhaps the owners of the idea behind the sign reading "homesites on the mesa". That was the original location of the cache box. One should not need a ladder unless they are using Geocaching orienteering which means "I must find everything in a straight line as if I am following the GPS in my car". I admit, I have climbed hills that have been easier to walk around for the same reason. Move 50 feet NW and the "cliff" is about four feet tall. Hence the 2 star terrain rating. In our subsequent trips, the sign has been "collected" so it's not that dramatic of a find as it once was. Unfortunately in the past 7 years the area has continued to deteriorate. With all the updates, required by administrators, confidence can be had that this once fairly cool cache can be found by someone with internet access on their phone and no GPS whatsoever based on the massive instructions required. If you are lost and cannot find this now, enjoy leaving the grind and the new area you have found yourself in. April 11, 2010 by DesertXplorers There is only one container and it is at the end. The other two stops just have coordinates written on poles to take cachers across the remnants of the compound. Hence the clue "poles" March 25, 2008 by DesertXplorers Back open for business. In case anyone gets stuck, the final coords are now in the hint. The only reason we made this a multi is so that finders are dragged across the compound and get an idea of what this place used to be. If anyone wants to just hit the end, use the hint. March 25, 2008 by DesertXplorers The second stage coords were replaced on the metal pole. They were still present on a small piece of plywood next to the pole. Now, if you are standing at the second stage, look around a bit, the coords are on the pole, a tile, the plywood, the roof and in the tree. For some reason the second stage coords wear off so I put them everywhere I could think of so no one gets a DNF. DXs
