Geocache Description:

The views from the trig point on Smearsett Scar are breathtaking. On a clear day you can see Pen-y-ghent (north-east) Ingleborough (north-west), Fountains Fell, Simon Fell, Moughton Fell and out towards Morecambe Bay and the Lake District (oh and of course the Celtic Wall).

A truly wonderful walk is to be had if you either park at Buck Haw Brow or in Stainforth village, making a great 8.5 mile circular taking in several caches on the way. From Stainforth you will pass over the fabulous packhorse bridge (don't take your car) where you can make a detour here to the Stainforth Foss cache. Then on to Smearsett Scar (via Hargreaves Barn) then Celtic Wall, Dead Man’s Cave, Buck Haw Brow, Giggleswick Scar and down to the lovely village of Stackhouse. Below it is the footbridge over the Wharfe with its weir and salmon pass, then back to Stainforth via the site of the Craven Lime works with its awesome Hoffman Kiln, where there is also a cache. Refreshments can we had at the Craven Heifer in Stainforth, or if you wish to extend the walk, at the excellent Elaine's Tea room in Feizor.

Smearsett Scar is on open access land (PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB ANY WALLS) and is best ascended/ descended from either of the two stiles in the wall at the Eastern end. One stile is to the North on the public right of way leading up from Hargreaves Barn and the other one is to the South, on open access land, hidden from view in a corner near a ruined sheepfold (see additional waypoints). From this ‘hidden’ stile there is a path on the ground (not on the map, crossing the Feizor/Little Stainforth footpath) that leads through a gate and up the hill to the Celtic Wall, then on to the Dead Man’s Cave cache.

The Scar can also be approached from the Western (Feizor Nick) end where there are now more caches, along the ridge via Pot Scar. It is not a good idea to take your car to Feizor as parking is very limited, unless you are visiting Elaine's Tea Room, that has it's own car park, where you can be assured of a warm welcome and superb food.
