A cache near a real life Repunzal's Tower
This tower is a beautiful folly built at the top of Saxonbury Hill by the Earl of Abergavenney in 1828.
As a child I would walk out here with my friends and marvel at the crumbling and ruined building.
It looked just like a fairy-tale Repunzal’s tower, 80 feet high with arrow slits along the spiral staircase.
The entrance door was long gone and the stairs collapsed.
After the hurricane of 1987, it was all but impossible to breach the barrier of fallen trees, adding to it’s fairy tale mystique.
Almost 20 years on, the tower has been re-furbished. Standing proudly above the tree-line. It can be just seen from the road between Frant and Mark Cross.
Access is easy now, via a gravel path in through the woods.
The Entrance door is replaced and there is no access to the interior of the tower.
Saxonbury Tor, is a splendid and little known destination for a woodland walk.
It stands in the rubble of it’s own masonry- which may be a clue as to the cache location.
It would be great if visiting cachers could post pictures of the Tor with their logs.
