In 1842, the geographical centre of Great Britain was declared to be Allendale and this was refined to Peckriding, south of the village. In order to arrive at this result it seems necessary to include the Channel Islands and Orkney! Recently, a rival claim has been made by the nearby village of Haltwhistle. The generally recognised (by cartographers at least) centre is in the grounds of a hospital south of Clitheroe, some 75 miles away! However... looking at the 10 furthest UK geocaches from this location shows 5 in the Scilly Isles and 5 in the Shetlands! Whatever the true centre, Peckriding makes for a nice walk of about a mile each way from Allendale.
Follow the B6295 road south out of Allendale and look for the footpath sign to Peckriding. Take this path down to the river. Variable GPS coverage may make it necessary to use the clue!
Although it is possible to park partially off the road next to the start of the footpath - N54 53.300 W002 15.268 (NY838548), I would recommend parking in Allendale and walking (approx 1 mile each way). For a slightly longer walk using a map, return by the west side of the river.
