Walking distance from the heart of Rock Sound, Eleuthera. The cache is located in a sunlit cavern requiring a bit of bouldering.
From N 24 51.246' W 076 09.373(located on Queen's Highway with parking on the wide shoulder), follow the path down and to the left of the beautiful inland blue hole (see photo). At the left-rear corner of the blue hole, your trail veers uphill and to the left(right leads to a ledge over-hanging the blue hole), and continues another 200 feet. The cavern will be to your right. The upper trail ends after a large (nearly) dead tree (N 24 51.190' W 076 09.407'). After stepping over a crack in the ledge (see photo), lower yourself into the cavern using the rock steps. Be careful as some of the rocks are loose. Three points of contact are advised here. Once off the ledge, you will find paths left, right, and center. Take the center path to the wall then go right and immediately left. Go deep back into the "Cavern of Doom!", a fairly large room where fascinating root systems drop down through holes in the ceiling. Enjoy the cool "underworld" temperature...a reprise from the baking sun. Toward the rear of the room (approx 3/4 of the way), you will see a mass of roots flowing over from a hole above.(see photo) A jagged boulder sits to the right. Stand closely in front of the roots and look left. The sunlit opening is your portal to discovery! Pass through this hole (watching your head) and follow the trail to the left passing through the "Chasm of Death!" and weaving through the small hanging roots. As the chasm ends you will see a rainbow arch opening (to the left). Sorry, the GPS does not work down here. The cache can be found under a small ledge concealed with rocks at the END of the rainbow! You will not find a pot of gold but instead..... THE PIRATE'S TOMB! Good luck!
Additional notes: No flashlight is necessary, however, it may be useful in exploring other parts of the cavern system. Feel free to explore but PLEASE DO NOT disturb the bats. The system is relatively small and basically makes a circular pattern. You will soon find yourself back in the main room where you can back-track your way out! Have fun but be careful!
Beginning cache contains: Bahamas keychain, some shells, small stuffed animal, and a music cd. I know.... hardly a pirate's plunder but we'll work on it!
