Mordenpool: I'm sad that fossil hunters acted so badly (illegal parking, littering) that Colts Neck Township took away the only parking location for this geocache. The Laurelwood Drive end of the trail is very overgrown, has zero parking, and is over 3/4 of a mile away.

Geocache Description:

The cache is in the Big Brook Preserve in Colts Neck NJ. Off street parking on Hillsdale Road at Preserve Sign/Bridge over Big Brook. Trail is flat, but can be muddy and rutted. Expect cache hiding spot to be overgrown in summer. There may be poison ivy in the area. Some of the land along the brook is marked private property. Cache can be found w/o straying onto private land or into the Brook itself.

We chose this site to combine two of our favorite pasttimes: geocaching and fossil hunting. You don't need to fossil hunt to uncover this cache, but if you have the time and interest, bring a trowel, sieve and small containers to hold your finds. Big Brook is one of the premier fossil collecting sites in NJ. Fossils from the late Cretaceous Period can be found by sifting through sand and rocks on the brook bed. Expect to get wet! We've found shark and ray teeth, belemenites, mollusks, small mammal bones. Check out the fossil guy web site for photos of the area and samples of fossils that can be found.
