Valley Gardens #1 - New Magnesia Well *CoinXchg* Traditional Cache
Deceangi: Rather than keep this cache temporarily disabled (which should only be used for shortish periods) I'm archiving it. If/when the cache is ever replaced I'll gladly unarchive it assuming it still meets the guidelines.

This is one of a series of caches around the Valley Gardens in
Harrogate. If you start at the main entrance to the gardens - next
to the *Pump House* virtual cache by dylanhayes (GCBDA5)- then you
can take a mostly level circular walk around the gardens, which can
be busy on fine days (and at night - when caching is not
recommended).
The Magnesia Well was one of several sulphur based mineral water
wells in the area, which became very fashionable in Victorian times
for their healing qualities and established Harrogate as the
foremost Spa town in Britain.
The original Magnesia Well Pump Room from 1858 was superseded by
this more ornate building in 1895 which, despite two severe fires
in the last century, has been restored and remains in use.
Near the front of the New Magnesia Well, there is an interesting
sign describing the wells and mineral content around what was once
called "Bogs Field".
The original cache has been replaced by a 35mm film canister with
log sheet and is now a COIN EXCHANGE. (There is no pencil, please
take one with you).
COIN EXCHANGE GUIDELINES:
- Only take a coin if you have one to exchange (if you want to swap
a 5p piece from 2003 with one from 2004 then that's fine)
- No duplicate coins (so only one 5p piece - try and bring some
small foreign coins with you)
- No coins larger than UK 1p coin due to container size
- Do not leave anything other than a coin and your log entry
- Please sign the log sheet and log the find even if you don't
exchange a coin
Original coins were: Spain: 5 ptas, South Africa: 1 rand, Euro: 1e
& 2e, US: 1c & 10c, Canada: 1c & 10c.
The original canister had been moved by "persons unknown" to an
incorrect location and has a damp logsheet - this has been replaced
in Mar 2006 by a new canister with a waterproof logsheet. Please
see the hint for the correct location.
The cache is a short distance away from the New Magnesia Well Pump
room in a less busy location. You may experience some GPS
inaccuracies due to tree cover around the cache area, (you will
probably need the clue). This is a fairly busy area at all times
with dog walkers and people enjoying the gardens, so please make
sure you are not observed at the cache site. We hope you enjoy
these three caches and the Valley Gardens.
