Ever since I first started caching I dreamed of hiding a cache in these woods but I thought the woods were part of Hillside Cemetery located in Roslyn, PA. The 80-acre parcel of open space is sandwiched between Hillside Cemetery on one side and Ardsley Burial Ground on the other. The two graveyards are owned by the same people but on a recent trip to the Hillside offices (in search of my great grandmother’s grave)… I was looking at an overhead photo of the cemeteries and I asked about the land in-between. That land, I was told, is called a wilderness management area and is owned by the township (Abington). After some research I discovered this to be true.
The only way to get to this open space is to drive thru one of the cemeteries. Hillside Cemetery has two entry points: One is ACROSS from Roslyn Elementary School on Susquehanna Ave and the other is on the corner of Susquehanna Ave and Bradfield Rd. (across from Wawa). This entry point seems to always be open, however, never EVER go into this graveyard after dark. You have been warned.
Half the fun of this cache is finding the right road thru the cemetery that goes into the open space. You will know you are in the right place when you cross thru a black chain link fence and you no longer see graves.
I guess it would only be right for me to tell you that a strange creature reportedly has been seen in this area. It is said to look like a huge deer but walks upright like a man. It makes an unearthly sound that has driven some people insane with fear. When I was hiding this cache I noticed some animal tracks that I first assumed were from a deer… but they were much too large and were very deep in the frozen ground…
“Hey… what was that sound…”
March 24th Update - After you find the first part of the cache... walk over to N40 07.196 W075 08.866 and find the trailhead. This will cut down on some of the bushwacking for the second part of the cache.
