This is a four season cache located along the “Wood River Trails”.
Travel Bug exchange is preferred on a ONE for ONE basis (Trade Up
or Trade Even) please and log them carefully. For those of you who
have used the trail system, I’m sure you’ll agree it is truly one
of the treasures of our valley. This access for the trail is just
off of the intersection of SH75 and Buttercup Road. Winter parking
is about 100 yards south of the intersection on the west side of
Buttercup Road.
This area still offers some great views from the benches near by.
These viewing/resting benches are donated by various individuals
and families, and are all up and down the 22 miles of trail that
currently exists. You will notice a little brass plaque in the
upper left of the backrest that identifies the donor and/or the
memorial. One of my favorite sights near here is the elk bedding
areas down along the canal and where it is running along the toe of
the hill, just a mile south of here, is a great spot. The sun burns
the off the snow quickly there and makes the best place for them to
cozy up and munch willow. The Hiawatha Canal provides habitat along
its 12 miles, for a wide range of critters including birds and
fish. It is diverted from the Big Wood River near the south part of
the Starweather subdivision, and just seems to end a little north
of the Woodside industrial area near the airport. I don’t know just
when the canal was built or by whom, but I’m working on it. Cache
contents: the usual little jimcracks and goodies. Travel Bugs like
it here and are welcome on a ONE for ONE basis please.
