Geocache Description:

Travel Bug Fallout Shelter

In 1957 President Esienhowers' administration began building a fourteen million dollar 112,544 square foot fallout shelter 700 feet under the five star Greenbrier hotel in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

The hotel agreed to let the government build this facility under a new hotel West wing provided that the taxpayers pick up the tab for the new wing.

The fallout shelter under the Greenbrier was designed to house the US Congress for up to sixty days in the event of a nuclear strike against the U.S. Complete with: air and water purification systems, power plant, communication systems, hospital and operating room, cremation oven, Senate and House Meeting chambers, office space for ranking members, press breifing room, tv station, 18 dormotories designed to sleep 60 people each, a few private suites, a dining room with fake windows depecting landscapes, and much more, this fallout shelter was designed to be the home to the legislative branch of our government during a nuclear catastrophe.

Although the shelter was never used, it went on full alert in 1962 during the Cuban Missle Crisis. Thirty years later, in 1992, the Washington Post leaked the existence of this top secret shelter in a newspaper article and the government was forced to close it.

Unlike it's larger, higher priced Northern cousin, the GreenBrier South is a modestly sized military ammo can located off the Greenbrier mountain bike trail at the University of West Florida.

The GreenBrier South was especially designed to house geocaching travel bugs that may need shelter, or a place to fallout for a while.

Anyone leaving a travel bug at the shelter must fill out the enclosed guest register providing the: date, their geocaching id, the travel bugs' name and the state from which the bug originated from. Also, be sure to log your name and date on the enclosed guest register while picking up a travel bug. Please don't log your find on the guest register. There is a separately enclosed log book in which you should log finding this cache.

It is the goal of the GreenBrier South to have at least one travelbug from each state stay at the shelter at some point.
