INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #126
”FOGWELL!"

Welcome to Fogwell Cemetery, one of the most pristine and immaculate burial grounds you'll ever see. Not a blade of grass or pebble out of place. Located in Lafayette Twp. in Allen County, it is surrounded by a white plastic fence. Earliest burial was in 1847. Lots of Coverdales and Fogwells buried here. This cemetery was inactive for many years, but there was an interrment here last year.

Look for the Monument of Samuel (1807 - 1861) and Matilda Davis (1813 - 1872) Fogwell--"FIRST WHITE SETTLER IN LAFAYETTE TWP." Doesn't indicate whether that refers to Sam or Matilda or both...Anyway, they were married c.1832 in Beaver Creek Twp., Green City, Ohio. Samuel was born in Maryland, as were his father and grandfather, who spelled the family name "Faulkwell". Their son, Samuel, served in Co. G, 152nd Ind. Inf.,an Indianapolis regiment, and emigrated west. A nephew from Green City, William, served in the 74th Indiana Infantry, a Ft. Wayne Regiment.

A similar modern granite marker can be found for:

JACOB FOGWELL
1841--1862
DIED IN THE SERVICE OF HIS COUNTRY

I don't know what relation he was to Samuel Fogwellmost likely a nephew. Pvt. Jacob Fogwell was a member of Co. C, 44th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which was mustered into service at Ft. Wayne in November, 1861. The unit participated in the capture of Ft. Donalson, as well as the battles of Shiloh and Stones River in 1862.
