Geocache Description:

A fairly long multi-cache situated in and around the historic fishing port of Brixham with a ‘lighthouse’ theme.

Brixham is a very picturesque town and is one of the busiest fishing ports in Britain. The town also shares a very interesting history well worth looking into. Some local attractions include a coffin shaped house, a replica of Sir Francis Drake’s ‘The Golden Hind’, and a statue dedicated to William of Orange, who landed at Brixham in 1688 to claim the British throne from James II. The town is also home to two fascinating lighthouses: Brixham Harbour Lighthouse and Berry Head Lighthouse.

Brixham Harbour Lighthouse is situated at the end of the half mile breakwater. It is a 29 feet high white painted cast iron lighthouse and was built in 1908. For more information there are some nearby notice boards which make interesting reading. Please be aware though that during stormy weather the breakwater may be closed.

Berry Head Lighthouse is Britain’s shortest, as well as highest! It was built in 1906 and was converted to unwatched acetylene operation in 1921 and modernised and converted to mains electricity in 1994. Originally, the optic was turned by the action of a weight falling down a 45m deep shaft, now made redundant by a small motor.

The panoramic views at Berry Head are unbelievable and the location has been designated an area of natural beauty, as well as being a haven for wildlife – look out for the mountain goats! Berry Head also has an interesting history being home to two Napoleonic Forts that are still very much intact. Do be EXTREMELY careful though, especially if you have children, as the cliffs, which are a 200ft sheer drop, are extremely dangerous and unfenced in places.

In order to the find the cache you will visit the above locations where there will be several questions to answer. The above coordinates are for the suggested parking at breakwater car park.
1. N 50°23.766 W003°30.761 The first part of this virtual involves a short walk from the car park along the harbour to the statue of William of Orange. What year was this unveiled?

2. N 50°24.330 W003°30.774 These coordinates are for the Breakwater Lighthouse. How many large bolts are used perpendicularly to fix the lighthouse to the ground?

Once you have the two answers, add them together. This makes ABCD.

For the next set of questions, follow the coast path signs to Berry Head. If you are tempted to drive, there is a car park at Berry Head but it is very expensive, and not much closer than the breakwater car park, only flatter. Also, the coast path provides a very nice walk.

3. N 50°23.965 W003°28.981. How many square miles of sea are visible?

4. N 50°23.941 W003°29.170. What year is on the plaque at this location? ... Add 27 to this figure

5. N 50°23.724 W003°29.392. How many steps here?

Now add these answers to questions 3, 4 & 5 together. This makes EFGH.

The cache is located at N50°(B-F)(E+A).FCG W003°EH.(H-D)(G-A)B.
Please make sure that the cache remains well hidden and be very careful when retrieving and replacing it as there are often many dog walkers / tourists about.
The cache is a standard ammo box so. Happy hunting…
