How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

This will be an event with a theme. If you think that you may have an addiction to geocaching, this event will be for you.

Let's get this out of the way. I'm not making fun of anyone who is in the Alcoholics Anonymous program or any other 12-step recovery program. I understand the problem some people have with alcohol and drugs, and I respect their attempts to get clean and sober. This event is intended for all geocachers to laugh at themselves and to get others addicted to geocaching.

I have reserved a covered pavilion in a local park large enough to accommodate 100 people. The hours for this event will be from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM. As of March 9th, there are 15 caches within 5 miles of the event location, 70 caches within 10 miles and 298 caches within 25 miles.

Please register when you arrive, as a welcome pack will be given out at that time. In the packet will have raffle tickets, event only cache waypoints, a story voting slip, and for the kids, a Geoword puzzle.

I will be releasing a multi stage cache at this event. I will have printed sheets for this new cache. A prize will be awarded for the cacher that finds it in the fastest time. Sheets will be handed out every 10 minutes so that no one will have an advantage by seeing where the previous cacher is going. It won't matter when you get your sheet, as I will be marking the time you got the sheet and I'll record the time you returned the sheet back to me. The first sheet will be handed out by a random drawing (for FTF rights) and from there, it's first come first served every 10 minutes.

Attendees can submit a short story up to 250 words of the reason why they should be considered the "Most Obsessed Geocacher". Email me your story, I'll assign a random number to it and I'll post it to Read Stories Here. The story must be true and it must be written in such a way so that there is no identifying information about the cacher. (You know, the names have been changed to protect the deranged.) A printed copy of all stories will also be available at the event. All stories must be submitted by May 18th. All attendees can read the stories prior to the event at Read Stories Here. Attendees will be allowed one vote for the story of their choosing. Prizes will be awarded to the three stories with the most votes.

We will also have a "Closest to the Pin" game. A prize will be given to the cacher that places their pin closest to the master pin.

An adult and a kid's raffle will be held. Raffle tickets will be given to each attendee. Additional raffle tickets can be earned by finding special event only caches. If anyone would like to donate an item for the prize or raffle table, please let me know.

Now for the important stuff - FOOD! We will provide hamburgers and hot dogs with the usual condiments, and some bottled water. Bring your own snacks and beverages. If any of you would like to bring anything else for the potluck, log a note or email me and I'll add a list on this page so others can see what will be on the menu.

We have reserved a block of studio rooms (for out-of-town attendees) with Hawthorn Suites of Warren for the special rate of $75.00 a night (this includes all taxes). Although there are several hotels in the area, this hotel is the closest to the event location (only two miles directly down the road) and is (we believe) the nicest. The facility is only two years old, and offers an indoor heated pool and a workout room for guests. In addition, a HOT breakfast buffet (sausage, eggs, etc) is included in the room rate. If you are interested in booking a room, please contact the hotel directly (at 1-586-264-8800) and ask for the "geocaching event" room rate. The hotel has agreed to hold these rooms at this special price until April 29th. For more information about the hotel, go to www.hawthorn.com and from the drop down combo box select the "Detroit/Warren,MI" item.

In order to help me with the amount of burgers and hot dogs to buy, could everyone that has posted a "will attend" log, please email me with the number of adults and children that will be attending with your group.

Anyone posting a new "will attend" log, please list the quantities of adults and children that will attend.

I will update this page as needed.

If you have an unit that requires a different cable please bring it and we can plug it into the laptop.
