BLUFFTON Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Rattlingcrew: Unfortunately, the BLM has contacted us wanting this cache removed due to some recent vandalism in the area. I was not aware the BLM had any property in this area, it is a sad deal as Kansas Geocaching is losing one of the most interesting cache areas in the state. It is also a site of some very colorful Kansas history, it was nice to visit and I am glad I got that opportunity. Thanks for your contributions. Glen

Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden in a green ammo can. It is in an area that is open to the public from March 1 - Sept 10. Areas of the road are dirt and sand and can be a problem when weather gets wet, so use caution.

The cache contains a logbook and various items for trade. It is about 100 yards from the road but you will encounter some heavy undergrowth and a bit of a climb. Snakes are a very strong possibility here so be aware.

This is an old campsite location on the BUTTERFIELD OVERLAND DESPATCH on the old SMOKY HILL TRAIL. It was used from the 1850's thru the late 1860's by explorers and travelers coming and going west. It was abandoned as a B.O.D. station after Indian troubles forced a move about 4 miles west to WHITE ROCK STATION which was easier to defend against attack. After it had been abondoned a group of Mormons camped here and were attacked and killed.
All of their wagons and equipment was destroyed including a threshing machine. Settlers in the area named it THRESHING MACHINE CANYON for this reason. If you look at the cliff -face closely, you will see many many names carved into the rock here, giving testimony to past visitors. PLEASE DO NOT ADD YOUR NAME. This area is protected under numerous laws against defacement and vandalism. Feel free to take photos but lets not make our mark on history here at the expense of the others. Use of metal detectors is also PROHIBITED. If you are intersted in more trail history check your local library for a book titled TRAILS OF THE SMOKY HILL by WAYNE C LEE and HOWARD RAYNESFORD. Mr. Raynesford was a retired surveyor from Ellis KS that spent over 30 years of his life researching, walking, and mapping most of the old SMOKY HILL TRAIL. He also placed limestone markers along most of the trail thru Kansas. Without his efforts much of what is known about the trail would probably have been lost.

The road continues on south from here and will take you all the way down to the main body on the lake along the west side of cove 1 of CEDAR BLUFF RESEVOIR. It is a nice drive and deer can usually be seen.

Have fun.
