Geocache Description:

A Huntsville Ghost Story Cache

Leg # 1
N 34 deg 44.021
W 086 deg 34.444

The listed coords take you to the grave of Thomas Bibb.

Thomas Bibb was a key player in Alabama's early statehood and eventually became the state's 2nd governor (1820-1821).

In 1839, during a trip to New Orleans, the former governor fell ill and eventually died.
Legend tells that Bibb's corpse was preserved in a barrel of whiskey for the trip back to Alabama. Bibb was eventually interred at the family plot in Belle Mina (located between Huntsville and Decatur).

Later, and for unknown reasons, the grave of Governor Bibb was moved to the present location. Following the move, sightings (at sunset no less) of a ghostly black carriage drawn by ghostly black horses was seen picking up Bibb and speeding away. Where to and why?
One can only guess that Bibb was displeased with his move from the family mansion some 25 miles away!

This should lead you to the tomb of Mary S. Bibb

Mary Chambers accidentally ingested carbolic acid. It should have been epsom salts which was a weight loss fad for the period. The carbolic acid should have been used along with arsenic to bleach her skin. It was another fad for the period.

Miss Chambers was engaged to be married and grew sicker as time grew closer to the ceremony. The marriage to William D. Bibb took place and Mary succumbed to her condition three months after the vows were exchanged. Legend has it that Mrs. Bibb was fond of her rocking chair especially during her final days. Legend also has it that Mary was buried inside her tomb sitting in that same chair.

Legend finally states that rapping upon said tomb will start the creaking noises made by the rocking chair occupied by Mary.

P.S. Yes, the two were related…Thomas was Mary's father-in-law.

Please be respectful when logging this cache.
