Verrry Interesting...
This is the
second cache in our series of tributes to television shows of the
'60s and '70s.
What do the
following expressions have in common?
"You bet your bippy"
"Sock-it-to-me"

"The Fickle Finger of Fate"
"One Ringy-Dingy, Two Ringy-Dingy"
"We don't have to care, we're the phone
company"
"Here come de judge"
"Look that up in your Funk and
Wagnalls."

You guessed it,
these were all catch phrases on perhaps one of the silliest shows
on television in the late '60s and early '70s - Rowan &
Martin's Laugh-In. For some reason thousands of folks tuned in
eagerly to see Dan Rowan, Dick Martin and a host of regulars like
Goldie Hawn, Jo Anne Worley, Henry Gibson, Lily Tomlin, Ruth Buzzi
and Arte Johnson make fools of themselves in front of North
American audiences. If re-runs of this show were ever shown today,
one would certainly wonder about the public's taste in comedic
entertainment so many decades ago.
Who could
forget Goldie as the "sock-it-to-me" girl, Ruth Buzzi as the
desperate old spinster and of course the poetic readings of Henry
Gibson? Presidential candidate Richard Nixon also appeared on the
show much to the surprise of an entire nation.
