This cache complements Walker Dan's 'Down by the Riverside' (GCE14F) and perhaps could be called 'Up by the Riverside'! The two caches can be combined on a 4 mile circular walk if desired, although it does involve a very steep climb up a minor road and crossing a number of stiles.
I am not sure of the exact nature of Owlet Hall which is now a cow byre. The 1871 census shows 6 people living here and it would have been right next to the railway line!
As with most footpaths of this type you can approach from two starting points. They are:
- N54 54.845 W002 17.085 (NY818577) minor road: Limited parking may require you to park further up the road and walk down. The path is way marked down to the end of the track, dropping down across fields, passing Owlet Hall where it crosses the route of the dismantled Allendale railway line. Please note that no right of way exists along the line of the railway.
- N54 54.534 W002 16.214 (NY827571) sewage works: The path drops down slightly and then pleasantly follows the riverbank west before a short steep climb up through some woodland.
Either way, the path is often wet and muddy and you should have suitable footwear.
The cache is just into the woodland, a few hundred yards down the path from Owlet Hall and the railway line. In common with Dan's cache, a clue is that this one is on the North side of the river. Although the two caches are not far apart on the map, it's actually a two mile walk to get from one to the other!
