Manana Island is more popularly known as “Rabbit
Island” because at one time, it was populated by a large
colony of rabbits and because it sort of looks like a rabbit
swimming in the ocean. Now it is a bird sanctuary. Kaohikaipu is
the smaller sibling island nearby and it has been called
“Flat Island” even though there is another island of
the same name further up the coast.
While hiking the Koolau ridge trail on the east end of Oahu,
Ceres, Dageek, Etoa Nrish and I found this great spot which called
out for a geocache. It is one of those places where you can stop
and take in a beautiful view of Manana and Kaohikaipu as well as
other parts of east Oahu.
You can get to this cache by continuing up the trail a bit past
“And We Have Liftoff” (GCGB35---see this cache page if
you need parking and trailhead info). The cache is NOT makai (ocean
side) of the trail so if your gpsr points in that direction,
don’t even think of looking near the edge of the cliff! It is
is situated in a safe spot about 8 feet off the trail, in the
brush.
We hope you will enjoy hiking this trail as much as we do.
