Geocache Description:

Located in Panamint Valley in the Argus Mountains. This cache is relatively easy and should be no problem for the ones with fortitude.

This is yet another walk into the past. This is at the townsite of "Reilly". This is a pretty big silver ore mining complex in the Argus Mountains that was found originally in 1875 by the Wibbetts brothers and later sold to a conglomerate of investors which included none other than Edward Reilly who the town was named after.$200,000 was what the Argus Range Silver Mining Company started with 7 years after Wibbetts discovery of silver, and with that the town was built including a 10 stamp mill.It was mined from 1882 to 1884 with the Argus Range S. M. Co.. In 1883 it peaked and was found to be one of the 17 most important towns in Inyo County, California. The road to the townsite goes up a wash, so it is at the whims of mother nature. When I went up there, a two wheel drive truck could probably make it no problem, but a car would probably be leaving a muffler or possibly leaving a trail of black viscous liquid. Thats not to say that home boy couldn't make it if he was very careful with his lowrider. Be advised, the rain could turn this road into 4 wheel only with little effort. The hike is about a .5 miles to the cache. That doesn't include the time spent wandering around the old houses which are actually very well preserved except for the roof. One of them, I would find quite nice. It has a nice fireplace(which surprised me) and windows, and even recessed shelves to put a lantern or possibly a photo of the other 15 brothers and sisters. I like this area, and I especially like the Panamint Valley for there are so many things to go explore and see there. There are many mining areas to explore and very interesting geology to be found for you rockhounds. It seems like every time we drive over there from Ridgecrest, we find something new and intersting.Enjoy!!!!
