Viewing platform of the Albemarle-Chesapeake Canal near the new Great Bridge draw bridge.
The Intercoastal Waterway (ICW) allows water travel from Cape Cod, Mass. to Brownsville, TX without entering ocean waters. The most heavily traveled section of the ICW is from Norfolk, VA to Miami, FL. The Albemarle-Chesapeake Canal was constructed in the 1850's to connect the North Landing River to the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River. The Great Bridge Locks ease the transition from Elizabeth River to the Canal. The canal carries heavy commercial and pleasure boat traffic year round. Each fall the traffic increases as "Snowbirds" migrate from the northeast to warmer southern climates. Spring marks their "flight" back home.
Nearby Great Bridge was founded in 1729. American troops defeated British forces in the Battle of Great Bridge, the first battle of the Revolutionary War fought on Virginia soil in 1775.
Recently the draw bridge on Battlefield Boulevard over the canal was replaced. A platform for watching water traffic was included in the construction near the south end of the bridge. It's a great place to watch boats enter and exit the locks and see the draw bridge open and close for water travel. I was fortunate enough to be at the cache one afternoon and it is very interesting to watch the bridge.
Cache has been downsized once more and is now a nano (aka Mr Magneto). It has been painted to blend with it's environment. Please replace as you find it. Parking is available on either end of the bridge but I recommend the south end. There is a pedestrian crossing on the bridge separated by a railing from the vehicle traffic over the bridge.
